At the feet of Port of Somosierra and in the middle of Lozoya Valley appears the beautiful walled town of Buitrago de Lozoya sculpted by the river of the same name creating one of the most beautiful natural trenches in Spain.

Visit to Buitrago de Lozoya

A walk through the center of Buitrago

Buitrago is partly what it is thanks to the Lozoya River, winding the valley, creating a beautiful horseshoe-shaped curve and making Buitrago a walled and well defended bastion. Although from Buitrago the reservoirs of Puente Viejas and Riosequillo are not seen, they are responsible for the beauty of the Lozoya River in its path before ending up in the spectacular Atazar reservoir.

You can get the best pictures of the city from the other side of the river or from the top of the wall, the highest point of this town. In Buitrago de Lozoya, almost everything revolves around the Constitution Plaza, the nerve center of the town and access point to the castle, the wall and much of the town's restaurants.

From the square there is a small street like the Arch, which accesses the wall and the Church of Santa María del Castillo, the most iconic church in Buitrago. We recommend that you get carried away with a walk along the river along the Coracha street or you climb to the top of the wall to see all the scourges of the town.

What to see in Buitrago de Lozoya?

1 Church of Santa María del Castillo

Within the walled enclosure we have the Church of Santa María del Castillo, from the 16th century and next to the ticket sales post on the wall. It is believed to be built on an old mosque. In 1936, because of a fire, a large part of the treasure that was kept inside, its beautiful altarpiece and numerous paintings and tables were lost. It is easily accessed from the Plaza de la Constitución by Calle del Arco.

2 The wall and the Clock Tower

Undoubtedly the wall in is the emblem and the most visible and characteristic architectural part of the town. You can climb on it and see a small open-air museum of medieval weapons that have been placed on top of the wall. Apart from that, it is possible to see a large part of the town and the Lozoya river.

3 Buitrago Castle

Gothic-Mudejar style was built in the fifteenth century and consists of seven towers. We do not get to see it since to be able to visit it you have to make a previous reservation. Today it is in the process of restoration.

4 Picasso Museum

This little gem is thanks to the great friendship of Eugenio Arias, the barber of Picasso. The museum is located in the municipality of Buitrago de Lozoya and has a collection of less than 70 works from the life of Picasso, including posters, lithographs or utensils that he collected throughout his life.
