Hiking in the Alentejo

Adventure in a rural world

At the time we talked about the great possibilities to do water sports in the Alqueva Lake, but in addition to being able to enjoy such environments, in Alentejo there are many paths for cycling or trekking. All Alentejo is full of trails. The region lends itself to this, since its rural environment, the lack of population and the amount of trees and field it has make it a real Eden for this type of adventure sports.

Hiking in the Alentejo

15km route in Castelo de Terena (Conquest of Terena)

From the door of the Castle or Castelo de Terena, a thirteenth-century castle, we started downhill to begin the route of “Conquista de Terena”, a 15km route that runs on oak and cork oak roads along the Lucefecit reservoir (Lucifer in Spanish).

Route in the Alentejo

The first part of the route runs alongside the N255 road to quickly take a dirt road between farms, where dogs bark at you and the oaks let you see wild boars in the distance. The route from the beginning looks easy, since it hardly has a slope, but if you press the eye heat, since there are few shady areas In these places.

In July or August it can be a true madness make a route here, but the rest of the year with the special climate of the area and with that thermal amplitude that precedes it, without problem, much better. In addition, unlike the hot and dry summer months, the rest of the year becomes a somewhat colder or even very pleasant climate, with green and blooming fields. This area of the Alentejo is famous for the cold nights and the good temperatures for the day, for us, the best.

Continuing with the route, this is best done with a guide or take the track on your mobile or GPS, as it is very poorly marked and is easy to get lost. There are several sections where you have to change the road and even cross the road, so if you do not carry the track, it will be almost impossible. Anyway, if you take a better guide, since in this way you will know the customs of the area and the history that surrounds this region, a region where the Romans, Arabs or Carthaginians have passed among others ...

As you walk the paths of the route of Conquest of Terena You will see farms full of pigs, cows, horses and even ostriches. In the final part, surrounded by holm oaks this is the Lucefecit reservoir, an oasis in the area and a recognized fishing point. It is worthwhile to deviate and look out over the dry riverbed or at the source of the reservoir, where there are several ruined mills.

In the final part of the route, crossing part by the asphalt of the N255, a beautiful one appears Roman or medieval bridge, we would not know how to say, a nice finishing touch to return and ascend to the starting point, the Castelo de Terena.
